mill and fill
Colo. 131 was on CDOT’s short-list in the region for repaving, Shanks said. “It needed it somewhat badly—when they have to do a full-blown ‘mill and fill’ as they call it, the road clearly needed some rehabilitation,” Shanks said. While there was some grumbling downtown about dust and noise.

snake run
The “snake run,” a retro design first popular in the 1970s, features bowls with modern radii for gaining speed, pipe coping for hand holds in tricks, and smooth transitions—“trannies” as the skaters call them—throughout.

hurricane amnesia
I recently received a call from a columnist who had attended a trade show and Gov. Crist’s hurricane conference. He felt industry was using scare tactics to promote their products. This couldn’t be further from the truth. This is what I call “hurricane amnesia”—a condition where people forget the risks when time passes between storms.

dollar-a-year man
Before his death in 1955, the Pictou-born man was one of the country’s top corporate lawyers, known for driving around the streets of Halifax in the city’s first Rolls-Royce limousine. During the Second World War, Mr. Stewart was in charge of the country’s coal supplies, working for the federal government as what was known as a dollar-a-year man.

secular
In Wall Street parlance, a very long period of falling or, at best, sideways-moving stock prices is termed a “secular” bear market. And there have been some doozies in relatively recent U.S. history.

commuter trip
The reason Wyatt has only heard about being on the road is that since he joined the Chiefs, on June 7, the only road games they’ve played have been commuter trips to Quad Cities and Burlington. In baseball parlance, a commuter trip is an over-and-back trip on the day of the game, done to save on hotel bills. Those trips can be a mixed bag. Players get to sleep in their own beds at night, but it makes for some really long days.

wendy
Misogyny, anti-intellectualism, vindictive political opponents, an out-of-control press—the resignation of Wendy Alexander as leader of the Labour party at Holyrood offers something to everyone with a thesis about the loss of public respect for the UK political process. First, misogyny. In recent years the Scottish political classes have introduced a new verb to the English language—the idea of being “wendied”—a term invented to describe the way that Alexander apparently browbeat her civil servants, assistants and anyone else who didn’t match her exacting demands. A wendying was often said to be carried out in a shrill manner—another word that cropped up in descriptions of her style.

double-dekker
The two-hour rally, flagged off from a city college grounds in upscale Basavangudi suburb, once populated by conservative Brahmins, culminated at Town Hall for a public meeting to the beats of drums, blaring music and a native dance by about 100 activists comprising hijras, kothis (feminine homosexuals) and “double-dekkers” (local term for transsexuals).

gas-sipper
“They’re paying $50 to fill up their cars, and they see me pay my $3,” said the Frankenmuth man who recently bought a 50cc Bronc scooter. And gas mileage that can reach up to 100 miles per gallon is exactly what has local dealerships selling the road-ready bikes as fast as they can get them in. It isn’t happening just in mid-Michigan, either. Nationwide, sales of what some affectionately call “gas-sippers” have jumped 24 percent in the first quarter of 2008.

nuke the fridge The short life of this term is ably covered by Jason Kottke.
In TV land, this phenomenon is known as “jumping the shark”: the moment when a once proud series swan-dives into putridity. It’s a reference to a dreadful, late-era episode of “Happy Days” in which a water-skiing Fonz lofts himself over the fin of a great white. But Indy fans were so demoralized, they coined a new phrase just for movie-franchise meltdowns. Ergo: “nuking the fridge.”

Several online sites for outdoorsmen sport tips about how to use pantyhose in the great outdoors. In fact, one couild start calling it “mannyhose,” which was once a term for pantyhose made by G. Lieberman and Sons, a company that still makes hose for men and now calls it ACTIVSKIN®.

run one’s pockets
The man asked Cooper for a cigarette, and when Cooper said no, the man told him to “run your pockets,” which is street lingo for “give me your money.” Cooper grabbed the gun, pushed the man to the ground and ran.
